Eco-Hacks for a Sustainable Christmas

It’s that time of the year again - the time when we show our love by buying things! But there it is - the GUILT! Because how can we spend Christmas and not pay attention to all this waste? I totally get it, but don’t worry - there are fun ways to do gifting that doesn't end with a terrible footprint on our planet.

Being someone who loves gifting (I’ve learned that this is actually one of the five love languages, so I don’t feel bad about it anymore) I’m not opposed to becoming a little extra generous over the holiday season. Trading gifts is actually a beautiful thing, so there’s no need to strip our traditions of this ceremony completely.

5 WAYS TO DO SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS GIFTING

1 - GIFT EXPERIENCES

We all have too much stuff - period! So what better gift to give someone than the one of an epic experience? Or something luxurious that she (or he) would never treat herself? And if the money is tight right now, how about a "secret" day with you? A day planned with hikes, cooking, and other fun things is always a fun gift. Besides - giving someone time could be the best gift of 2020!

2 - AIM FOR CONSUMABLES

If you're someone who loves giving (because who doesn't love watching someone unwrap their gifts), things that can be consumed or used are always great choices! Chocolates, marmalades, wines, or candles - give someone something luxurious they wouldn't usually treat themselves.

3 - LOOK FOR SECOND HAND

Not all special things you gift have to be new - help shift the trend and gift someone something used this year! I'm sure your local thrift shop has all sorts of gems to look for, and if you don't want to go to a store right now, find a second-hand store online (like ThredUp or TheRealReal)

4 - WRAP CONSCIOUSLY

We use insane amounts of wrapping paper for the holidays! A simple way to be more conscious this year is to be creative with your wrapping. Reuse paper from previous years, paper bags from the store, or why not old newspapers? My personal favorite - play with fabrics around the house! Scarfs, pillowcases, and blankets are all great for wrapping (just make sure you'll feel comfortable asking for the "wrapping" back!)

5 - SHOP WITH INTENTION

For those (few) gifts you do decide to buy - make sure to shop them consciously. Buy things that people actually need, things with good quality that will last a long time, and look for items that will help people live more conscious and sustainable lives. Supporting small and local businesses is usually also a great choice - for the planet and people.
