What is Climate Optimism?
Session One
Welcome to Session One
What is climate optimism and what does it mean to be a climate optimist?
I understand if this concept feels strange to you. Isn’t everything about climate change very negative? The sad answer to that is “yes”. However, when you flip the narrative on our climate stories and in fact recognize that to be alive today is an extraordinary gift, because it means that we get to participate in the shift towards a better world, you start to see things from a new perspective.
And wow, are things about to get exciting!
In this master class I will help you gain that narrative shift so that you can live your life here on Earth to its fullest potential. I want you to feel motivated and inspired to make a difference and understand that although these times are booth uncertain and scary, they are incredibly exciting too.
They are times of change.
In this session:
What is climate optimism?
What are the basics of being a Climate Optimist?
How do we shift the narrative from responsibility to opportunity?
Could these be the most exciting times to be alive?
Homework:
Shift the Narrative
This Master Class exists of ten sessions. At the end of each session, I will leave you with some homework to start applying what you just learned. It’s up to you if you do it or not, but the fastest and most powerful way to start living as a change-maker and climate optimist today is by taking action, so I hope you don’t take this course too lightly!
Today’s homework is about shifting the narrative. What would it look like to shift the narrative on climate change in your life? What stories would you tell yourself about your own actions? About your family's actions? About the world around you and society at large?
How can you change the conversation from one of “should” to one of “wow”?
Next time you find yourself in a moment of shame that you’re not doing enough, or when a little thought seeps into your head that goes something like: “I really should start composting…” try stopping yourself for a moment and start a new conversation.
Instead, say,
“What would I do if I had the opportunity to change my ways and contribute to a better world? How would I feel if I made this opportunity my new mission?”
Say that yourself and see if you feel more inspired to get a composting bin and if you do, I dare you to take action. Because what do you have to lose? You could be part of creating history and become a climate hero, or you could not. The choice is totally up to you!
Whenever you’re ready, I hope to see you back here for session two!
